Trapped in the icy waters of the Northwest Passage | Podcast | Overheard at National Geographic
On the trail of a doomed 19th century polar expedition, modern explorers met the same danger: devastating, unpredictable sea ice. For centuries, the Northwest Passage, the long-sought sea route connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans through northern Canada, was a holy grail of Arctic exploration. Even now, sailing through it isn’t guaranteed. Mark Synnott, a National Geographic Explorer, writer, and adventurer, attempted to sail his own boat through the Northwest Passage to retrace the doomed 1845 expedition of British explorer Sir John Franklin. None of the Franklin expedition’s 129 men made it home, but what exactly happened remains a mystery. Photo Caption Mark Synnott poses for a portrait aboard his sailboat, Polar Sun. The Arctic, Synnott says, is “pretty much the most magical place on Earth.” But when sea ice cornered Synnott and Polar Sun into a Canadian bay while traversing the Northwest Passage, the scene felt less magical and more like a punch to the gut. Wild Italy - Part 1: Volcanic Wates | Nature Documentary Watch 'Wild Italy - Part 2' here: https://youtu.be/xsfG1P6esl0 The journey begins in the volcanic waters of the Caldera of Manziana to Lago (or Lake) Bracciano, crossing the hilly, wild land of the Etruscans, in Central Italy, showing us the rich wildlife which to this day inhabits streams, rocky gorges, woods, and lakeshores. A million years ago, Italy was a battlefield where enormous, violent volcanoes raised mountains and erased valleys, in a world with no room for plants or animals. Then, a hundred thousand years ago, the craters turned into lakes and wildlife conquered the volcanic waters: from spectacled salamanders living in the lakes to the giant sperm whale swimming in the sea that surrounds the islands, skies dwelled by golden eagles hunting at the top of the volcano and Eleonora’s falcons living on the cliffs. ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Subscribe Free Documentary - Nature Channel for free: http://bit.ly/2mFDC3Q Facebook: https://bit.ly/2QfRxbG Twitter: https://bit.ly/2QlwRiI ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ #FreeDocumentaryNature #Documentary #WildItaly ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Free Documentary is dedicated to bring high-class documentaries to you on youtube for free. Where I've Been for the Last 2 Months | I Install New Windows in my Off Grid Log Cabin, Home Again!
After 6 weeks on the road exploring the sunny American south, I return to the cabin on the coldest day of the year. On the first warmer day, I take advantage of the winter thaw to replace the front windows on the cabin, from salvaged single pane wood fixed windows to new wood and double pane awning windows that will provide better insulation in the winter and more ventilation in the summer. I talk about where I've been, show some footage of the American southwest and share some plans for upcoming projects.
